In 1985 Yale Tishman is development director of a young university art gallery in Chicago and close to securing a collection of 1920s paintings that could make its name. As his career rises, AIDS kills his friends one after another, beginning with Nico, whose family keeps gay men away from the funeral. Yale learns that his jealous partner, Charlie, has been infected after an affair, and fears for his own health. Nico's younger sister Fiona, who made her brother's friends her family, is the one he has left. Thirty years later Fiona is in Paris looking for her daughter, Claire, who was lost to a cult years ago, and stays with Richard, a photographer who recorded the Chicago crisis, as the past comes back to her.
