Ruben Blum, a historian of taxation, is the lone Jew in his department at Corbin College, not quite in upstate New York. In the winter of 1959–1960 he is put on the committee weighing an application from Benzion Netanyahu, an exiled Israeli scholar of the Spanish Inquisition. Letters about the candidate arrive from his colleagues and associates, and Blum reads the man's scholarship for himself. When Netanyahu turns up for his interview with his family unexpectedly along, Blum has to play host to guests who wreck his comfortable American assumptions. Blending campus comedy with lecture and fact with fiction, the novel takes in Jewish history, Zionism, antisemitism and the price of assimilation in America.
