In France during the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Private Cyril Bagger has outlasted the war through cunning and lies. When an unearthly shrieking starts driving the troops mad, he is sent out with four misfits, the innocent Arno, the brutish Popkin, the jittery Goodspeed and the shell-shocked Veck, on what is meant to be the mercy killing of a wounded comrade. Instead they come upon a glowing angel tangled in wire, who looks to each of them like a woman he knows and who might bring the fighting to an end. Sure that their ambitious major general will exploit her, they desert and carry her through the shelling, each man courting her for his own wish while greed, jealousy and suspicion pull the group apart. The story is told in one unbroken sentence.
