Reverend John Ames is seventy-seven, his heart is failing, and he has a wife many years his junior and a boy of six. In 1956 he starts writing a letter for the boy to read once he is a man, about a life spent preaching in a small prairie town in Iowa. He writes of how he lost an earlier wife and their baby and of the long years alone; of his grandfather, a visionary who fought for abolition in Kansas and lost an eye as a Union chaplain; and of his father, a pacifist at odds with the old man. As he writes, his namesake John Ames Boughton, the wayward son of his oldest friend, comes back to town, and Ames must wrestle with long-held resentment and the question of forgiveness.
