Joe Kavalier, a Prague art student schooled in the escapes of Houdini, gets out of Nazi-controlled Czechoslovakia hidden in the coffin that carries the city's golem, and reaches Brooklyn by way of Siberia, Japan and San Francisco. His cousin Sammy Clay, who walks on legs weakened by polio and dreams of flight, wants to cash in on America's craze for comic books. Together they dream up the Escapist, a masked hero who frees the oppressed, and later the mysterious Luna Moth. As their creations make them rich in New York, Joe cannot stop thinking about the family he left behind and how to rescue them from Hitler's Europe. The story runs from 1939 into the 1950s.
