Ilka Weisz accepts a teaching post at the Concordance Institute, a think tank in Connecticut, and reluctantly leaves her circle of friends in New York. At first she struggles, comically, to get to know anyone. Then she is welcomed into the circle of Leslie Shakespeare, who runs the institute, and of Eliza, his wife, whose kitchen becomes the heart of the group's life. Over thirteen linked stories the institute's intellectuals meet at dinner parties, picnics and Sunday brunches, talk late into the night over wine and cheese, fall in and out of love, and face the deaths of people close to them, while their private thoughts reveal the loneliness and unease under the everyday routine.
