Ray Foster, called Fos, comes home from lighting the trenches of France fascinated by electricity, x-rays and the glow of living things. Watching a meteor shower on North Carolina's Outer Banks, he is smitten by Opal, the daughter of a glassblower who coaxes colour out of light. The couple marry and help run a Knoxville photo studio with Fos's army friend Flash, a charming rogue whose appetites bring them grief when they collide with Prohibition law and the Ku Klux Klan. Moving to Opal's family land on the Clinch River, they at last have a son, Lightfoot. When the Tennessee Valley Authority takes the farm, Fos finds work at Oak Ridge, the secret laboratory racing to build the atomic bomb.
