Headshot

At Bob's Boxing Palace in Reno, Nevada, eight teenage girls compete in the 12th Annual Women's 18 & Under Daughters of America Cup. The book follows the bracket bout by bout, moving through the minds of the fighters and also through trainers, mothers and fathers and the handful of onlookers. One is haunted by what happened at a pool where she was a lifeguard, another has built a whole outlook on an old fur hat; one steadies her nerves by running through the decimals of pi; two related girls are hometown prodigies. There is no dialogue: a single narrating voice describes each punch and reaches into the girls' pasts and the lives ahead of them, while every winner takes something of the beaten girl along into the next round.
