Miles Franklin Literary Award

Australia · Since 1957 · For books in English

Awarded each year under the will of the writer Miles Franklin to the novel of the highest literary merit that presents Australian life in any of its phases.

Miles Franklin (1879–1954), author of My Brilliant Career, left her estate to fund an annual award for the novel of the highest literary merit presenting Australian life in any of its phases. It was first awarded in 1957, to Patrick White's Voss, and Perpetual is its trustee. A panel of judges names a longlist, then a shortlist of finalists, and the winner, who receives $60,000; the Copyright Agency's Cultural Fund gives each shortlisted author $5,000. The judges withheld the award in 1973 and 1983, finding no entry good enough. Until 1988 an award was dated by the year its books were published; since 1989 it carries the year it is announced. The setting counts: Frank Moorhouse's Grand Days, set in 1920s Europe, was disqualified as not Australian enough.
