The Lovers

Amir loves Jamila, above all, because she smells of money. She is wealthy, restless and impulsive, and understands how tangled desire and power can be; he is poor, a widower, steadier but also more naive, blind to how her family has shaped her. Both have loved before, and they are pulled towards each other as opposites. The novel follows the private world the two of them build: how they met and fell in love, their highs and lows, the pressure of family expectations, the need to please each other and the urge to part. Told in short, shifting episodes that move back and forth in time, it reads like a fable of a love stripped to its essentials.
