Their Brilliant Careers

Written as a set of sixteen biographies, this is a comic portrait of a national literature that never existed. Among its subjects are Rand Washington, a hugely popular science-fiction author and committed racist; Addison Tiller, celebrated for bush stories though he never travelled beyond Sydney; the experimental writer Arthur ruhtrA, who wrote a whole novel without the letter C; and Rachel Deverall, who uncovered the hidden source of modern literature at great cost. Each life touches the others, and everything from the dedication to the index is part of the invention.
