Tree Palace

Shane, Moira and Midge, with the teenagers Zara and Rory, call themselves 'trants': itinerants who move across the country north-west of Melbourne, sleeping in abandoned buildings and stripping them of heritage fittings to sell when money runs short. Near the town of Barleyville they find a home they call the Tree Palace and hope at last to stay. Then Zara, only fifteen, discovers she is expecting a baby she does not want, longing instead for an ordinary life with the town boys, so Moira resolves to raise the child herself, and Shane falls foul of the police in town.
