Laura Fraser and Ravi Mendis take turns at the centre of the story across forty years. Laura, motherless and with an artist's eye, grows up in Sydney under a chilly, career-minded father; money left to her pays for years abroad, and back home she takes a job with a firm that produces travel guidebooks. Ravi, in Sri Lanka, loses his father, sees his mother struggle, and is caught up in the early promise of the internet and computing. Both are shaped by travel, though she leaves by choice and he is driven out: Ravi reaches Sydney as a political refugee who hopes simply to earn a living and see something of the country, and their paths meet. The novel asks where they, and a crowd of others, really belong.
