Sydney, May 2021. Ashraf, an Egyptian Australian academic, watches his career and private life fall apart; his ex-wife has moved to Yemen with their teenage daughters. Hannah, a young Palestinian journalist with a new baby, feels her newsroom does not value her voice and pushes back against its racism, while she and her husband Jamal, Ashraf's PhD student, fear for loved ones in Gaza. As the bombardment intensifies in the last weeks of Ramadan, police detain a pupil from a nearby Islamic college, who faces terrorism charges for protesting against a university's links to an Israeli weapons maker. Hannah sets out to report what really happened, at a risk to her job, while Ashraf plays it safe and looks for a way to rescue his reputation. Each has to choose what to defend, and what keeping quiet will cost.
