Yolanda and Verla, who have never met, come round from sedation in a crumbling compound far out in the outback, fenced in by live wire. They and eight other young women have their heads shaved, are put in antiquated clothing, beaten, and made to labour in the heat under two cruel, bungling guards and a self-styled nurse. Bit by bit the captives discover the thread that links them: each was publicly shamed over sex with a man of influence: a sportsman, a politician, a television host. Weeks drag on and supplies dwindle until the guards seem as stranded as their prisoners, and Yolanda and Verla begin to trap and forage to survive.
