Father Frank Darragh is newly ordained, earnest and inexperienced, serving an Irish-Australian Catholic parish in a Sydney suburb in the early 1940s. The war in the Pacific has come close, the city braces for a Japanese invasion, and American soldiers bring their own temptations. Darragh is drawn into his parishioners' moral troubles: a Black American deserter locked up by the army because he loved a white woman, and Kate Heggarty, married to a prisoner of war, and whose candour and virtue unsettle him. When Kate is murdered, the young priest becomes a suspect, and clearing his name with the police will not settle matters with the Church or with his own conscience.
