Joe Grim seldom won a bout, yet he became a star because no amount of punishment could put him down. In 1908 and 1909 the Italian-American fighter toured Australia to astonished crowds. In the east he played a small part around the Jack Johnson–Tommy Burns 'Fight of the Century'; in the west he ended up locked in an asylum. The book cuts between that tour and the present day, blending an invented version of Grim's life with musings on bodily and mental suffering, on what it means to be a man and to be fragile, and on why people tell stories, with many doubtful jokes thrown in.
