Compassion

Set in colonial New South Wales in the 1800s, the novel dramatises the life of Duringah, or Nell James, whose father Muraging is a Darug hero and who becomes an outlaw herself. It draws on the story of one of the author's ancestors, who was put on trial for taking stock animals, and follows her on a wandering, violent path of revenge against the colonisers, showing the perils Aboriginal women lived with, told from an Aboriginal viewpoint rather than the settlers'.
