Yusuf, a famous palm-oil tycoon of Malaysia's boom years, made his family enormously rich by razing huge areas of Borneo's rainforest, and his children know he was also behind the brutal vanishing of an opponent. After years away, his son Harun, who has made it in Los Angeles tech, and his daughter Roz, a painter scraping by in Sydney, fly home to Malaysian Borneo for his state funeral and to face what he has left them. They hope to give back something he took from the woods where they grew up. On their search for atonement they come up against a heritage of might and graft, and are pursued by the spirits of colonial rule, of their family, of language and of the jungle.
