In present-day Tasmania a con man who fakes antiques comes upon a strange illustrated manuscript and, once it is gone, sets out to rewrite it from memory. Its author is William Buelow Gould, a convict, liar and forger shipped from England to the penal settlement on Sarah Island, ruled like a personal fiefdom by a mad Commandant who wears a golden mask. Gould wins the favour of the surgeon Tobias Achilles Lempriere, a zealot for science who wants the definitive catalogue of the island's fish and has Gould paint them. Between the paintings Gould records the cruelty and madness of the colony, his past crimes, and his love for a black woman, the warder's mistress, learning too late what such love can cost.
