Isobel Callaghan has quit her job to try to make her way as a writer in Sydney. Alone in an attic room with nothing left to eat, and afraid her mind is failing, she sets out for the corner shop and collapses before she gets there. She comes to in hospital and is told she will be sent to a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Blue Mountains. There she joins a closed little society run by remote, all-powerful doctors and shared with an ill-matched crowd of fellow patients. Helped by great books, she faces what happened to her in the past and, as she slowly recovers, comes to some hard truths about who she is and what people are like.
