Annabelle Beck, an academic in Melbourne, discovers that her husband has left her for one of his students. She retreats to her family's old house in Townsville and joins an archaeologist who checks sites of cultural importance before mines are approved. Through this work she meets Bo Rennie, a Jangga stockman she knew as a child. Drawn to each other, they set out into the Jangga's ancient heartland in rural Queensland to survey the site of a dam, a journey back into her childhood where their grandparents' lives start to give up secrets that threaten their chance of happiness.
