Michael 'Butcher' Boone was once a celebrated painter in Sydney. Now divorced, bankrupt, cut off from his young son and fond of the bottle, he lives as caretaker on a collector's property in northern New South Wales and looks after his huge, damaged brother Hugh; the two take turns telling the story. On a rain-soaked night a glamorous stranger, Marlene, arrives in designer shoes. She is married to the heir of a famous early twentieth-century artist, and her claim that a neighbour owns one of his originals pulls the brothers into a game of forgery, money and art-market deceit that carries them on to Tokyo and New York, while Butcher falls hard for her and Hugh fears being left behind.
