In 1836 the clergyman William Yate boards the Prince Regent in London, on his way back to missionary work in the north of New Zealand. The crossing takes four months, and the ship becomes a world of its own, with its cabin passengers and their quiet hopes, the emigrant families below decks and a hard-bitten crew of sailors and boys. On board Yate falls into a love affair that changes him and unsettles everyone around him. Once the ship docks at Sydney, the friendships of the voyage give way to betrayal, and as scandal spreads through the young colony it is Yate who stands to lose his good name and his life. The story is drawn from real events.
