A woman who moved abroad comes back to Australia after her father's death to empty his house. Her plan is to make its contents into an artwork, a wall, after the example of the Chinese artist Song Dong. She has not counted on the web of envy, grudges and family trouble she thought she had escaped by leaving, and it grips her before she even lands. Told as one long, circling monologue, the novel follows her as she works through piles of inherited junk and tries, compulsively, to explain herself, while grief, memories of anorexia and the blurry line between art and life press in.
