The Eye of the Sheep

Jimmy Flick does not fit in: he moves too quickly and too slowly, notices everything and nothing, and the grown-ups around him rarely understand what goes on in his head. His family is poor and only just coping. The one person who knows how to handle him is his mother, Paula. She shows him how counting sheep can bring sleep, hugs him hard enough to quiet the spinning he feels inside his body, and shields him from his father. When that fragile world collapses, Jimmy is left to make his own way through a lonely, frightening place and to try to set things right.
