Ruth Field is seventy-five, a widow living alone in a seaside house on the New South Wales coast where she lived with her late husband, Harry; her grown sons ring out of duty. One morning she wakes convinced a tiger was in the house during the night. Later that day a commanding woman named Frida appears, saying the government has sent her as Ruth's carer. At first Ruth welcomes Frida's vigour and her readiness to listen to stories of Ruth's girlhood in Fiji, and Frida even helps bring an old sweetheart back into her life. But neither Frida nor the tiger is what it seems, and as clues gather, Ruth must ask whom she can trust, and whether she can trust her own mind.
