You Must Remember This

Grace, long widowed, lives by herself, and her memory is going. She takes events from decades ago for yesterday's, loses track of the fact that Howard has died and at times does not know Liz, her daughter, a lawyer bringing up an eight-year-old on her own, who keeps checking on her. After Grace is found wandering outside after dark in her dressing gown, Liz moves her into a care home, where she roams the halls looking for a way out. In short chapters arranged out of sequence on purpose, the story moves between that present and Grace's past: a poor childhood with a damaged Second World War veteran father and a cruel, drinking mother who left her to mind her twin brothers, and her marriage. As her everyday memory slips, older and deeper layers of her life rise to the surface.
