The Last Garden

Wahrheit was founded by exiles to await the Messiah's coming, and the waiting has gone on far longer than planned; Pastor Helfgott feels his flock's faith wearing thin. On the very day Benedict Orion arrives back from boarding school, his father Matthias kills his wife and then turns the gun on himself. Struck dumb and unable to go inside the house, the boy takes up residence among the horses and chickens, held together by the animals and the routine of farm work, as the pastor keeps watch over him through a year of grief.
