Erica Marsden's son Daniel, a painter, is serving a sentence for causing a death through negligence. Overwhelmed by grief, Erica breaks contact with everyone she knows and buys a dilapidated beach shack in a tiny settlement on the coast of southern New South Wales, a short drive from the jail where Daniel will not speak to her. She brings with her memories of her aloof father, a psychiatrist who ran an asylum with a labyrinth in its grounds, of the mother who walked out, and of an estranged brother. Soon she is consumed by the idea of making a labyrinth of her own beside the sea. She cannot do it alone: she needs a wandering stonemason named Jurko, a neighbour who never waves back and an architect in town who brushed her off, and so she must learn to trust and confront what she has done.
