Tom Keely has lost his marriage, his job and his good name, and with them any belief in what used to matter to him. From a shabby flat high up in a tower block he looks down, bruised and furious, on a society he has walked away from, and he intends to stay alone. Then he runs into two of his neighbours: a woman he knew when they were young and her withdrawn small son, a boy quite unlike any Keely has met. Half against his will he lets them into his life. But the two bring trouble with them from their own history, and Keely is soon pulled into a world that could wreck all that he has come to care about. The novel asks how anyone can act rightly in a compromised world.
