A haze cloud hangs over Praiseworthy, a little town in Australia's far north, foretelling both environmental disaster and the return of the ancestors. Cause Man Steel, also known as Widespread, has dreamed up a scheme to save the planet and end his people's economic dependence: a transport business run by Aboriginal people with donkeys, for which he hunts the ideal platinum animal. His wife, Dance, flees his fixation by following the flight of moths and butterflies and searching online for ways to send her Aboriginal and Chinese family home to China. Their older son, Aboriginal Sovereignty, plans to drown himself in the sea; the younger, Tommyhawk, hopes his brother dies, leaving him free to attach himself to the country's mightiest white woman and become white and powerful too.
