A man who calls himself a student of colours and shades has left a capital city for a remote town near the state border, planning to spend the rest of his life there. He turns to what has survived in his memory: scattered images rather than whole scenes, often defined by a fall of light, from stained-glass windows and childhood marbles to a line from Virgil and the women he has idealised. He maintains that his account records things that truly happened, revising and remarking on it as he writes, and the borderlands of the title point also to the edge between living and dying, and between himself and someone else.
