From the day his little sister was born, Jesse has believed it is his job to keep her safe. He is thirteen now and Rachel is eight, and their mother, Gwen, never stays anywhere long: she gets by on casual work and some drug dealing and keeps bringing home men who mean trouble. For a time she parks the children with her father, a former drinker now devoted to the Bible and who gives them rules, routine and decent food. Then Gwen is back with Ray Crow, a charming man with violence just below the surface, and the family heads from Melbourne to Adelaide. Finding a hidden gun and a pile of cash, Jesse sees how serious the danger is, and one wrong move of his own puts Rachel at risk.
