A writer remembers 1986, when daring new ideas seemed to be everywhere. Born in Sri Lanka, she came to Melbourne as a graduate student, writing a thesis on gender in Virginia Woolf's fiction. In bohemian St Kilda she fell in with painters, campaigners and fellow students, and with Kit, who said his relationship with his girlfriend was 'deconstructed'. They became lovers, and her feminist principles collided with her possessiveness. On campus, French theory reigned, and she found it blind to women's concerns. Then something Woolf wrote in her diary shattered the narrator's view of her heroine and upended her research. Blending fiction and memoir, the book asks what happens when what we want contradicts what we believe, and who bears the shame when secrets come out.
