Printed back to back, the two halves of this book can be read in either order. In one, Lili, whose family left Asia for Australia during her teens, is twenty-two and spending the early 1980s as an English teacher in Montpellier before going on to Oxford. She makes friends, sees how North African migrants are treated, feels uneasy about her downstairs neighbour and longs to live as boldly as Simone de Beauvoir. In the other, Lyle, another Asian migrant, has a security job with a shadowy government department in a near-future Australia where Islam is forbidden and smoke drifts constantly from fires that never go out. Terrified of deportation, he clings to 'Australian values' while fretting over his wife, his children and his elderly mother.
