A military coup has broken the country, and Ren has withdrawn to a lonely mountain frontier, where she lives by hunting and barter and tries not to remember. Her isolation ends when Zoe Harker, a young officer, climbs the forested slopes with orders to catch the rain heron, a bird from folk tales believed to grant abundance and destruction alike. Zoe tries to make Ren show her where it lives, and Ren is pulled into the search despite herself, with a medic patching up the injuries of both. Scenes from Zoe's childhood in a town by the sea fill in her past. As legend seeps into the real world, the women are made to reckon with their regrets, their loves and their fears.
