The Jensons are new to a working-class suburb, and they are not like the neighbours. Rex Jenson spoils his sons, Colt and Bastian, with bikes, toys and an above-ground pool, and the local children soon gather: Syd Kiley and his brother Declan, their mates Avery and Garrick, and Syd's eldest sister, Freya, who looks up to Rex as the opposite of her own father, a drinker. To the kids, the Jensons seem to have stepped out of a glossy magazine; to Colt, his father is stifling. Told in turn by Colt, Freya and Syd, the novel brings the hidden unhappiness of these households to light and asks whether Colt has got Rex wrong, or has seen something in him that will destroy the family's new start.
