Warwick Prize for Women in Translation

Since 2017 · For English translations

Awarded each year by the University of Warwick to the best book by a woman writer translated into English from any language and published in the UK or Ireland, in any genre: fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, children's books, graphic novels and plays.

The University of Warwick launched the prize in 2017 to address the gender imbalance in translated literature and to bring more international women's voices to readers in Britain and Ireland. It is open to fiction, poetry, literary nonfiction, fiction for children and young adults, graphic novels and play texts written by a woman and translated into English by a translator of any gender, first published in print by a UK or Irish publisher in the year before the award. Judges announce a longlist, then a shortlist in October and the winner in November. The £1,000 prize is divided equally between the writer and her translator or translators. Yoko Tawada's Memoirs of a Polar Bear, translated by Susan Bernofsky, was the first winner; in 2022 the judges named joint winners for the first time.
