It is 1943, and fifteen-year-old Gina, the motherless only child of a general, is suddenly sent away from Budapest without being allowed to say goodbye to anyone. Her new home is a severe Protestant boarding school in the provincial town of Árkod, a fortress of rules where everything is forbidden. She wants to escape, but something she has yet to discover holds her there. Trying to find her place among the other pupils in a world full of grown-up secrets, she hears of a statue in the school garden, a girl with a jug called Abigél, who is said to help anyone who writes to her.
