Ana Blajinschi is close to ninety when her relatives decide she should go into a care home, and they send a young great-granddaughter to talk her round. Ana, however, uses the visit to speak about what happened to her as a young woman: the deportation to Kazakhstan, packed with thousands of others into freight cars, a journey on which she thought she had met the man she would love, and the decade of hunger and war that followed, which she endured through prayer and stubborn hope. Partly based on real testimony, the novel travels deep into darkness.
