In an old apartment house in Lviv, an enormous coloured glass window is at risk, and the effort to rescue it brings a young woman together with Mikołaj, a man much older than she is. Their alliance becomes a love affair, and through him she discovers her city of collapsing balconies, decorated façades and broken monuments to Lenin. The novel tells of her growing awareness of art and of the past, of upheavals and revolutions that tear families apart, and of a longing to be free.
