The author sets out to tell her family's story and finds herself asking at once whether the past can be remembered at all. Sifting through the papers and things her relatives left, she studies how earlier lives linger in today's world and how the twentieth century's great upheavals survive in a single person's recollections, while people vanish without trace and old documents become unreadable.
