Gyeongha, a novelist, keeps dreaming of a snowy field planted with thousands of black logs like grave markers, with the sea rising round them before she can move the bones. She thinks it comes from the massacre she wrote about in her last book, and plans a film about it with her friend Inseon, a former photographer and documentary maker who moved back to Jeju to care for her mother and now works with wood. Years later Inseon, in a Seoul hospital after cutting off two fingers, asks her to go to Jeju that same day and save the bird alone in her house. Through a blizzard Gyeongha loses her way, and at the isolated house she meets the history of Inseon's family and the massacre of civilians on Jeju seventy years before.
