Osebol lies on the Klarälven river in northern Värmland. As forestry was mechanised and Swedes moved to the cities, many residents left: the shop shut, the ski slope went wild and the river bridge was closed to cars. Life continues all the same. Some live on farms handed down for generations, others came from elsewhere. The author, who grew up in the village, spoke with nearly all of its adults, aged eighteen to ninety-two, and turned their words into poem-like, many-voiced accounts. Grief, happiness, anxiety and humour build a portrait of rural Sweden past, present and future.
