Natsuko, 38, grew up in a working-class part of Osaka and now writes novels in Tokyo. Single, she wonders whether she could have a child on her own, and while researching donor conception she gets to know Jun Aizawa, a man conceived that way who is looking for his biological father. His partner Yuriko, however, challenges her: bringing a child into this world, she argues, is a reckless bet made for the parents' sake, and perhaps cruel.
