Governor General's Literary Award for French-language fiction

Prix littéraires du Gouverneur général : romans et nouvelles

Canada · Since 1959 · For books in French

Awarded each November by the Canada Council for the Arts to a book of fiction in French, a novel or a collection of short stories; the year is that of the award, for books published in roughly the preceding twelve months.

The Governor General's Literary Awards were first given for books of 1936; until 1959 only English-language books were eligible, and the French-language fiction award was first presented that year. The Canada Council for the Arts funds and administers the awards, given in seven categories in each official language. For each category a peer assessment committee of writers reads the eligible books and names a shortlist of finalists in October, usually five (finalists have been announced since 1979), and the winners are announced in November. In the 2000s the winning author received $15,000, raised to $25,000 in 2007 for the Canada Council's fiftieth anniversary, and every other finalist $1,000.
