The second part of a cycle set on an island in the southern United States much like Key West, at the turn of the century. Written as a single paragraph of very long sentences, the novel moves from one consciousness to the next: returning figures such as Renata, Carlos, Samuel and Mélanie, and new ones, among them Jessica, a young aviator sacrificed to her parents' ambition, the Virgin of the Bags, a modern Joan of Arc who hears voices in Manhattan, and Caroline and Jean-Matthieu, ageing artists whom time seems to be driving apart. Justice and the death penalty, racism, class conflict, AIDS and the condition of women run through their lives.
