A son calls up the woman who was his mother, trapped by fate, who from beyond the grave keeps up a relationship of tenderness and struggle with her son. He wakes, breathless, from a dream in which she spoke to him in an unknown language, anxious and voluble, trying to give him at last the answer to her nagging question: who was I, what was I? In the middle of the night it is he who asks himself the question, chanting his three first names, Joseph, Serge, Robert, in the hope that one of them will answer that he was right to love her, right to hate her and flee, and right to come home, even late.
