Pantéli, a fishing village on the Greek island of Leros, 1943. Thomas wants to become a sailor, but at sixteen he loses a leg to a shell fired as the British try to drive Mussolini's forces off the island. His dream vanishes, and so does the love of Olga. He becomes a mender of nets, nicknamed Tripodis, the three-legged man, a curiosity for tourists, consoled now and then by the keeper of a bar. Then one day a sailboat anchors in the bay, and the man who steps ashore looks like him and carries his name: a rival who seems to claim the life Thomas never had.
